Everything you ever wanted to know about spring cleaning but were afraid to ask
Daylight saving time, warm temperatures and chirping birds are all signs that spring has sprung and it’s time to do spring cleaning. This annual ritual differs from weekly cleaning because it’s far more intense. Spring is the perfect time to thoroughly scrub every nook and cranny of your home, condo or apartment.
If you choose to tackle this chore alone, set aside several days for the task. And if you don’t have that much time to spare, enlist your family to help with the process since many hands make light work. Or, better yet, leave the job to the professionals at My Cleaning Lady. A domestic referral agency, we work with only the best housekeepers in the business and are based in LaVerne, California. We offer professional housecleaning services all along the 210 corridor in the San Gabriel Valley and the Inland Empire.
Regardless of how you choose to spring-clean your home, here are some hints to ease the process:
- Remove, clean and replace everything
We’re not proposing that you dispose of all of your furniture and personal effects. But the only way you will be able to reach every single surface is if you pull each and every item away from walls and pull large items outside of closets and cabinets. Once you’ve pulled it all out, vacuum, dust or wipe down items and clean floors before replacing.
When warm spring weather arrives, it’s time to pack away sweaters, coats and other cold weather clothing. Storing seasonal clothing is easy to do if you follow a few simple rules. Make sure that storage containers are clean, cool, dark and dry to keep clothing in good shape for winter.
- Maintain Appliances
We often take the functionality of our appliances for granted. But high-ticket items deserve attention. Each spring take time to inspect major appliances for wear and tear. For example, the coils of the refrigerator should be vacuumed and the drain pan should be cleaned out. Clean lint buildup from dryer vents. Remove accumulated gunk from your oven and refrigerator. Clean dishwashers, disposals, and washers. For details about how to clean everything from your refrigerator to your dishwasher, check out our series: Caring for Your Appliances.
- Conquer Clutter
Spring is the perfect time to remove clutter from your house. To help figure out which items to keep, sell, give away, or trash. If paper clutter is a persistent problem, find out how to reduce paper piles around the home.
- Attack the Garage
It may be daunting. But spring is a great time to clean out your garage. Whether you need to organize a cleanup day or just remove a few items for donation or garage sale, give your garage a little love when you do your spring cleaning. It will pay to give attention to you’re the spot that stores your tools, sports equipment and holiday decorations.
- Do Windows and Blinds
Spring is a great time to inspect and clean window treatments. Wipe or wash blinds in the backyard or in the bathtub. Send drapes to the dry cleaners or toss washable curtains into the washing machine. Cleaning window treatments after a long winter can brighten an entire room. Don’t forget to dust window casings, wash window sills, and clean hardware while you are at it.
